About the Photographs: This website is a collection of some of my favorite photographs.
Most of the photos on this site were taken on vacations or at our home in Michigan. Many are what I call "photos of opportunity"; photos where you are looking through the camera or have the camera handy when you happen upon a scene or an event occurs.
The crow in the snowstorm at the Grand Canyon is a good example. It was the only time I've been to the Grand Canyon. We were just passing through and had only two hours to see what we could and be on our way. It was snowing and I could hardly see past the edge of the canyon. Cursing the snow I stood near the edge looking through the camera for something to shoot, when the crow flew into the picture and I clicked the shutter.
That's how it goes on vacations. You drive around, and there can be good scenes but the weather's bad, the time of day is wrong or there's just no place to pull off the road. Flower photos have similar problems. You can watch the flowers develop and you know that on Tuesday they'll be perfect - but you have to go to work, or on Monday night we have one of our famous Michigan thunderstorms that ruin everything in the garden.
Most of the photos on this site are pretty much as they came out of the camera, with minimal manipulation other than the usual color balance, and exposure/contrast adjustments as you'd do in a darkroom. All of the photos have a memory and a story, and perhaps that's why I like them. I remember the vacation and the feeling I had when I saw the scene and shot the photo, or the anticipation - waiting for just the right day or time to shoot, and then setting up for the shot and clicking the shutter.
I hope you enjoy the site and the pictures. Please feel free to email me with comments or questions.
About the Galleries
I've tried to organize each gallery by subject so people with limited time or slow connections can visit the subject that interests them most. I've also limited each page to 12 thumbnails or less so they don't take too long to load.
It's difficult to keep this categorization though so it may change over time as I add photos. Is it a mountain shot, or a scenic? Is the frog on the hosta an animal shot or a garden shot?
The Odds & Ends page is for photos don't fit the categories and for overflow from the other pages.
All images are © copyright Wade Harris. If you wish to use them for any purpose please contact me for permission. Although I'm an amatuer and haven't pursued selling my photos, some of them have been published and I would like to retain control over their use.
That said, I hope you enjoy them.
